No. 8 Michigan Stops Gannon & Mercyhurst in CWPA Western Division Season Openers

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Fifth-year senior Brittany May (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) notched her 50th career victory as the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan water polo team rushed past Gannon University, 16-3, and Mercyhurst, 17-2, in CWPA Western Division action on Friday night (March 12) at Canham Natatorium.

May became the second goalie in program history to win 50 games in her career with an eight-save performance against Gannon, joining Betsey Armstrong (2002-05) as the only two goalies to reach the plateau. Sophomore Tara Brigham (Baytown, Texas/Sterling) made seven saves, playing two periods in each game and earning the win over Mercyhurst.

Junior Lauren Orth (Poway, Calif./Poway) had a hat trick in the night cap as part of a six-point day, while sophomore Megan Mulder (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) had four steals to lead the defensive effort.

Michigan jumped out to a 10-0 lead before Gannon solved May. Sophomore Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville), junior Cara Reitz (Miami, Fla./Gulliver) and senior Casie Kelly (Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley) each scored twice during the rally. The Wolverines continued to roll in the second half, getting two goals from freshman Hannah Clyde (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), sophomore Milli Brown (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) and freshman Kate Hayes (Spring, Texas/Capistrano Valley).

Orth finished her hat trick within the first six minutes of the opening sprint against the Lakers. Michigan held an 8-2 lead at the break, which freshman Marley Andrews (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) made stand up in the cage with four saves for a perfect second half. Hayes dented the twine twice in a half that featured eight different U-M goal scorers.
