No. 8 Washington & Jefferson Defeats Macalester 15-14, Falls to No. 9 Grove City 13-5 at Chatham University
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The No. 8-nationally ranked Washington & Jefferson College women's water polo squad defeated Macalester College by a 15-14 final, but dropped a 13-5 decision to local-rival and No. 9-ranked Grove City College on Saturday, March 6 at Chatham University.
The W&J-Macalester game was a back-and-forth affair with W&J finally pulling ahead in the fourth quarter. The match was tied at halftime (8-8) and after three periods (11-11).
W&J scored four of the first six goals in the fourth quarter, including a pair by junior Kate Van Schaik (Arnold, Pa./St. Mary's). Macalester added a goal with 1:10 remaining to close within one, but the Presidents' defense held strong to preserve the win.
Seniors Katie Silvestri (Kingsville, Md./McDonogh) and Jessica Barby (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) had four-goal efforts to lead the W&J, while Van Schaik added three scores.
Grove City ran out to a 13-2 lead in the nightcap behind seven goals from Chelsea Thompson.
