No. 17 Princeton University Manages Iona 13-9 in ECAC Tournament First Round
PRINCETON, N.J. -- The 17th-ranked Princeton University women's water polo team opened the 2010 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship with a 13-9 win over Iona College at home in DeNunzio Pool. Princeton broke a tie game open with four consecutive goals in the third quarter.
The teams traded goals through the first 16 minutes with Iona managing a lead of more than one goal when it opened the game with two straight goals.
Princeton came back to lead 5-4 at the half, but Iona evened the score two minutes into the third frame. The Tigers then went on a run to build a 9-5 lead as goals from Saranna Soroka, Phoebe Champion and two from Julie Phillips built the margin. Princeton then held through the finish with the margin never getting closer than three goals.
Phillips was one of five Tigers with two goals in the game, joining Audrey Zak, Carolina Ardila, Brittany Zwirner and Champion.
Kristen Ward made 14 saves through three and a half quarters for the win.
