George Washington Universtiy Falls to Brown & Colorado State at Princeton Invitational
PRINCETON, N.J. -- The George Washington University women's water polo team shot a combined 11-of-45 en route to losses to No. 18 Brown University, 8-2, and Colorado State University, 12-9, on the first day of the Princeton Invitational.
GW (1-4) managed just two goals through its first 40 minutes of action Saturday, falling to nationally ranked Brown 8-2 in its opener before falling behind 6-0 in the first quarter against Colorado State. The Colonials rallied with a 5-1 second quarter against the Rams to trail 7-5 at halftime, but wouldn't get any closer in the 12-9 loss.
Senior Tara Sullivan and sophomore Allison Peotter scored man-advantage goals as the Colonials converted 2-of-22 shot attempts against the Bears. GW trailed just 3-1 at the half, but three unanswered goals from Brown in the third quarter proved to be too much. Seniors Emily Chereson and Marissa Stamler each drew six ejections, with Stamler adding five steals, while junior goalkeeper Charlotte Schou made six saves.
The Colonials had a single shot in falling behind the Rams, 6-0, after eight minutes in Saturday's late game. GW finished 9-of-22 shooting the rest of the way, including 5-of-12 on the man-advantage, but the six-goal deficit was too large to overcome. Sophomore Megan Walker led the attack with three goals, followed by two goals, two assists and two steals from Stamler. Peotter chipped in a goal, three assists and five steals, followed by goals from juniors Melissa Sesana and Erin Delker and sophomore Monica Hanson. Schou finished with 10 stops.
