Michigan's Lauren Colton Named February 8 Women's Varsity Western Division Rookie of the Week
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of Michigan's Lauren Colton (Fr., Tustin, Calif./Tesoro) scored three goals with four kick-outs drawn and two steals in the No. 6-ranked Wolverines 11-10 OT sudden death victory over No. 3 the Univeristy of Hawaii at the Stanford Invitational to earn the February 8 Women's Varsity Western Division Rookie of the Week award.
Against Hawaii, she netted a pair of five-meter goals as the Wolverines rallied from a 5-0 first period deficit to tie the game and capture the victory in sudden death overtime.
She was called off the bench twice in the fourth period to convert five-meter penalty shots, sandwiching goals around a marker by February 8 Western Division Co-Player of the Week Alison Mantel (Jr., Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) to pull the Wolverines to within one goal at 9-8 before Mantel scored with 47 seconds left on the clock in regulation to force overtime.
The victory marked the highest-ranked opponent Michigan has defeated in the history of the Wolverines' water polo program.
Overall, Michigan went 2-2 at Stanford Unviersity's invitational defeating Hawaii and No. 7-ranked San Jose State University (12-6 W), while falling to No. 1 Stanford University (12-5 L) and No. 2 the University of Southern California (14-6 L).
