No. 16 Indiana University Stops Sonoma State & Marist at Triton Invitational
LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Jakie Kohli scorched the nets for a school record-tying six goals, all coming in the first half, as No. 16 Indiana University (3-4, 0-0 CWPA West) rolled through Sonoma State University, 15-6, on Sunday morning at the Triton Invitational. In the afternoon session, the Hoosiers got off to a hot start and hung on for an 8-6 victory over Marist.
Against Sonoma State, the Hoosiers came out firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 5-1 lead after one period behind three of Kohli's goals. Kohhli also scored the first three goals of the second quarter to extend the lead to 8-1. Kelly Palmberg added three goals for the Hoosiers in the morning game, while Katie Black, Kate Dunn, Kelsey Campbell, Hanna Eimstad, Sara Joseph and Lauren Wyckoff each tallied one apiece in the winning effort.
Cassie Wyckoff started in the cage and finished with nine saves in three quarters of action. Katie Carson came on in the fourth period and notched three blocks.
In the afternoon game, Indiana trailed Marist early on by one goal, before Nicole Redder tipped in the Hoosiers' first goal of the contest. Redder finished the game with a team-high four goals, along with three steals and two assists.
Campbell and Kohli had two goals each to help the Hoosiers pick up their second straight win.
Eimstad distributed the ball effectively throughout the game, finishing with three assists. Two of the assists came on identical entry passes to Redder for post-up goals in the third period.
Wyckoff put together another solid effort in the cage, halting 14 of Marist's 25 shot attempts in a complete 32 minutes of action.
The Hoosiers led 8-3 early in the final period, before Marist went on a three goal run to pull within two. Indiana clamped down in the waning moments of the contest and held on.
