Crimson Downs Iona 10-8 on Day Two of Harvard Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Harvard women's water polo team stayed undefeated by recording two wins on the second day of the Harvard Invitational. The Crimson downed the New York Athletic Club, 10-8, to begin the second day. Harvard closed out the day with an 11-8 victory over Iona.

Harvard (4-0) had to fight back from a 4-1 deficit against the New York Athletic Club early on. The Crimson managed to storm back and knot the game at 4-4 to enter halftime. Freshman Aisha Price netted the fourth goal with just two seconds remaining in the opening half. Harvard held on to a 7-6 lead heading into the final quarter. Sophomore Laurel McCarthy made clutch saves in the final 2:30 to preserve the win. Sophomore Devan Kennifer and Price led the way for the Crimson with each player posting a hat trick. Ita Barton-Kettleborough, Elise Molnar, Shannon Purcell and Patricia Smith each tallied a goal apiece. McCarthy finished the game with eight saves.

Game two of the Harvard Invitational went a similar way for the Crimson as the teams stood at a 4-4 standstill entering the half. Harvard eventually pulled away, outscoring Iona 5-2 in the final eight minutes to clinch its fourth victory in as many games. Kennifer netted five goals while Molnar and Price chipped in two scores each. Sophomore Lizzie Abbott and Purcell closed out the scoring for Harvard with a tally each. Between the pipes, McCarthy turned in another solid performance, turning away eight shots by the Gaels.
