No. 19 Indiana Handles Colorado State 13-7 for First Win of the Season
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 19 Indiana University Hoosiers (1-2, 0-0 CWPA West) grabbed their first win of the young season on Sunday against Colorado State, 13-7. The Hoosiers were fueled by four goal efforts from Jakie Köhli and Nicole Redder.
Redder went on a three goal run in a 57 second span during the fourth period to put the Hoosiers in control. Kara Butler tallied a pair of goals, and Kelsey Campbell, Kate Dunn and Lauren Wyckoff each chipped in one in the winning effort.
Cassie Wyckoff got the start in the cage, collecting three saves in one half of action. Katie Carson grabbed four saves as she also played 16 minutes.
Indiana jumped out of the gates quickly as Köhli looked off a defender and fired in the first goal of the game just over a minute into the action. After CSU answered with a goal of their own, Wyckoff tossed a long pass to Redder for a power play goal to give the Hoosiers a 2-1 lead. The junior trio of Campbell, Redder, and Wyckoff each finished the game with two assists.
The Hoosiers led 6-2 early in the second period before the Rams went on a two goal run to pull within two. Köhli answered with a pair of goals to close out the half, including a skip shot from deep to give Indiana an 8-4 halftime lead.
Colorado State controlled the third period, scoring two goals and limiting the Hoosiers offensive attack.
Two minutes into the fourth quarter, with the Hoosiers holding on to a two goal advantage, Redder took control. The first two goals by Redder were scored after assists by Campbell. Seconds later, Köhli broke away after a steal, missed a close-range shot and Redder was there for the put-back.
The Rams would score one more goal late in the fourth, only to have Butler answer with a spinning shot in the post. Köhli then capped the game with her second skip shot of the contest to put the Hoosiers on top 13-7.
The Hoosiers will be back in action on February 6-7 at the Triton Invite in La Jolla, Calif.
