Johns Hopkins Named Men's Varsity Division III Team of the Decade (2000-09)
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The Johns Hopkins University water polo team has been voted the Division III Varsity Men's "Team of the Decade" according to visitors to the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) website. The Blue Jays went seven-for-nine during the decade (2000-09) at the Division III Eastern Championship.
Hopkins, which earned its second-straight CWPA Division III Eastern title this year after electing not to compete for the 2007 title, has won five of the last six titles and recorded the program's 12th overall crown since the tournament started in 1991.
During the decade (2000-09), Hopkins appeared in nine Division III Eastern title games under the tutelage of head coach Ted Bresnahan claiming the 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008 crowns versus Massachusetts Institute of Technology, while knocking off Washington & Jefferson College this past year for the program's seventh title in 10-years. In addition, the Blue Jays fell to MIT in the 2000 and 2003 title games.
Further, Hopkins did not drop a home game to a Division III opponent during the decade to maintain a perfect mark in Baltimore against Division III opponents over the past 20-years.
Among CWPA institutions, Hopkins qualified for the 2000, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Eastern Championship tournaments setting a program high with a fourth place finish in 2009.
The program recorded 22 All-America, a Collegie Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA) Academic All-America, five Division III National Player of the Year and two Division III National Coach of the Year honors while finishing No. 1 in the final Division III National Rankings twice with an overall mark of 171-155.
Overall, Hopkins notched seven seasons of .500 or better play in 2002 (17-17), 2003 (17-15), 2004 (18-16), 2005 (24-6), 2007 (16-15), 2008 (17-17) and 2009 (17-17).
