California, Redlands & St. Francis Top September 17 Men's National Varsity Polls
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of California-Berkeley and the University of Redlands retained their ranks at No. 1 in the Men’s Varsity and Division III polls, while Saint Francis College (N.Y.) climbed to the top spot in the Collegiate Water Polo Association poll as the September 17 Men’s Varsity polls were released to the media.
California continues as a unanimous
No. 1 selection from the September 10 poll after receiving 98
points in the preseason poll. Cal is seeking to finish the season
at #1 for the third straight year as the Bears captured the 2006
National Title as well after ranking #1 in the preseason.
Overall, the Top 10 of the poll remains unchanged from the
September 10 balloting as the ten best programs in the nation
continue to be from California.
The United States Naval Academy, which was ranked No. 11 last
week, slipped back to No. 13 allowing the University of
California-Davis and Saint Francis College (N.Y.) to climb to No.
11 and 12, respectively, this week. University of the Pacific,
Santa Clara University and University of Redlands held on at No. 14
through 16 for another week, while California Baptist University
climbed up to No. 17.
The final four spots in the Top 20 are shared as Princeton
University and Brown University tied for 18th place, while the
United States Air Force Academy and Johns Hopkins University round
out the Top 20 as the pair tied for the 20th position.

The Bulldogs of the University of
Redlands maintained their grip on the No. 1 spot in the Division
III poll by a narrow margin as Johns Hopkins University closed the
gap to a single point at 98-to-97 points.
Johns Hopkins University, which was tied with Pomona-Pitzer
Colleges for second in the preseason poll at 93 points, improved by
four points this week to maintain second place in the poll after
receiving 95 points a week ago.
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges continue in
third place with 85 points to round out the only teams in the
Division III Top 10 to hold onto their spots from the September 10
polling.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Chapman University
are tied for fourth after ranking fifth and ninth, respectively,
last week, while Occidental College jumped two places to take over
sixth.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges slipped a place to seventh,
California Lutheran University fell four spots to eighth, Whittier
College improved to ninth and the University of California-Santa
Cruz moved to 10th to round out the Top 10.

In the Collegiate Water Polo
Association, the league experienced dramatic shifts in the balance
of power as former No. 1 the United States Naval Academy fell to
third and Saint Francis College (N.Y.) ascended to the top spot in
the poll.
Saint Francis, a unanimous No. 1 selection, earned 100 points,
while Princeton University moved up one place to take over second
and Navy fell back to third.
Johns Hopkins University, which upset Navy earlier this week,
climbed two places to fourth, while Brown University, George
Washington University, Bucknell University, Mercyhurst College,
Iona College and Fordham University round out the Top 10.
