Przekota & Gronkowski Join St. Cin as Iona Team Captains
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Iona College
men's water polo head coach Brian Kelly announced recently that he
has named junior Joe Przekota (Park Ridge, Ill./St.
Patrick's) and senior Ed Gronkowski (Sr., Chicago,
Ill./St. Rita) captains for the stretch run heading into
Northern and Eastern Championships. Przekota and Gronkowski join
senior captain Patrick St. Cin.
"We really demand a lot of our captains," said Kelly. "We expect
[our captains] to go above and beyond and show leadership on a
daily basis." With the naming of Przekota and Gronkowski, Kelly
said he "wanted to make sure we had the right leadership heading
into championships." He added that both players have "really
matured and shown leadership as the season has progressed."
Przekota ranked third in the country last week in goals scored and
has netted 62 on 129 shots so far in 2008. Gronkowski ranked 27th
in goals and has put 41 goals in the back of the net. St. Cin also
ranks in the top-30 in goals with 42. Gronkowski and St. Cin are
tied for second on the team with 15 field blocks and Gronkowski is
second on the team with 33 kickouts drawn.
Looking ahead to the championships, Kelly said "it's been a pretty
level playing field in eastern water polo this year." Kelly
stressed that the most important thing is to get to Easterns. "We
have a team that could not just get a top 4 seed, but a team with a
chance to win."
