No. 16 Texas A&M Goes the Distance Versus No. 10 Colorado to Prevail 5-4 OT at National Collegiate Club Championship
ATHENS, Ohio -- Matt Davis (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) scored with five seconds left in the first overtime period to power the No. 16 Texas A&M University Aggies to a 5-4 OT win over the No. 10 Buffaloes of the University of Colorado. The win places A&M into a ninth place game matchup with either the University of Pennsylvania or Duke University at 2:15 p.m. on November 16.
The Aggies trailed only once in the game as Colorado's Clint Beall (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) scored on an exclusion at the 6:28 mark of the second period to give the herd a 1-0 lead. Texas A&M answered back less than thirty seconds later as Player of the Game Brandon Lawver (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) scored on an exclusion opportunity at 5:59 to tie the game at 1-1.
Colorado and Texas A&M were tied for only a minute before the Aggies' Brian Carey (Sr., Belvidere, N.J.) put his team ahead with an even-strength goal at the 4:59 mark. Lawver struck again before the end of the half splitting the Buffaloes' defense for his second goal of day and a 3-1 A&M lead.
Following a scoreless third period, Colorado took control of the game's pacing, exploited a strong counterattack and tied the score in the fourth period. Beall tacked on his second score of the game off an exclusion at 5:53 and Jamie Savant (Fr., Sacramento, Calif.) put home his only score at 4:16 to knot the game at three-all and force overtime.
In the first overtime period, the teams traded goals as A&M's Cameron Glass (So., Clear Lake, Texas) scored at 2:16, Beall answered for Colorado with 20 seconds left and Davis registered his game-winner 15 seconds later for the 5-4 final.
Neither A&M nor Colorado could put home another goal in the second OT period as goalies Kevin Webster (Jr., Denver, Colo.) and John Fitzgerald (Jr., Singapore City, Singapore) blocked down a combined three shots.
Colorado will next be in action at 3:30 p.m. on November 15 in the 30th and final game of the tournament as the Buffaloes will take on either Penn or Duke for 11th place in the final tournament standings.
