No. 3 Arizona State Uses 7-Goal First Half to Outlast Grand Valley State 8-4 & Advance to NCCC Semifinals
November 15, 2008Matt Sussdorf
ATHENS, Ohio -- Wesley Sjoholm (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) netted a hat-trick to earn Player of the Game honors and Betsey Armstrong (Gr., Ann Arbor, Mich.) stopped four shots to lead No. 3 Arizona State University to an 8-4 win over No. 6 Grand Valley State University in the second round of the National Collegiate Club Championship at Ohio University.
The win places the Sun Devils into a semifinal against defending national champion and co-No. 1 team in the nation California Polytechnic State University as Arizona State and the Mustangs will clash at 8:40 p.m. on November 15 for a spot in the title game scheduled for Sunday, November 16 at 12:45 p.m.
The 2008 Southwest Division champion, Arizona State can become the first collegiate club program in recent memory to advance to the national title game in only the club's third year of action. Last year, the Sun Devils placed 13th in the National tournament field as ASU earned host and Southwest Division champion Arizona's spot as the No. 16 seed, but are already assured of finishing no worse than fourth at the 2008 Championship.
Against Grand Valley State, the Sun Devils took a 1-0 lead with 4:07 left in the first period on a shot by Sjoholm, but sealed their victory in the second period outscoring the Lakers 6-1 to take a nearly insurmountable 7-1 lead into halftime.
Tyler Oakes (Gr., El Cajon, Calif.) started the ASU scoring run in the second period with a natural goal at the 6:23 mark before Sjoholm buried a penalty shot at 5:21 to set the score at 3-0. Matt Sussdorf (Fr., Brea, Calif.) scored on an exclusion opportunity at 4:56 and at even strength at 1:30, Sjoholm completed his hat-trick at 2:07 with a natural goal and Grand Valley's Zach Heathman (Sr., Grandville, Mich.) scored on an exclusion opportunity with 18 seconds remaining before Joshua Phillips (Sr., Torrance, Calif.) finished the scoring in the period with five seconds remaining for a 7-1 lead at the break.
The Lakers were unable to overcome the deficit as Marc Wagner (Sr., Holland, Mich.) scored off an exclusion at the 5:10 mark and Oakes converted a penalty shot at 2:34 of the third to give the Sun Devils an 8-2 lead entering the final seven minute period.
Grand Valley State attempted to rally in the fourth period for a come-from-behind win or to force overtime with goals by Anthony Sall (Jr., Zeeland, Mich.) and Josh Geneva (So., Grand Haven, Mich.) to trim the score to 8-4, but the Arizona State defense, limited time and the six goal deficit entering the frame were too much to overcome.
For Grand Valley, Peter Huyser (Jr., Zeeland, Mich.) made seven saves in taking the loss.
