USC & California Lutheran Remain No. 1 in May 6 Varsity Top 20 & Division III Top 10 Polls

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of Southern California and California Lutheran University held onto their rankings as the No. 1 teams in the Varsity Top 20 and Division III Top 10 polls this week as the teams both recorded 100 points to be unanimous selections in the May 6 Polls. Both program's will continue the season at the NCAA Championship this weekend at the University of Maryland.

In the Varsity Top 20 poll, the top 20 teams in the nation remains the same as the April 29 poll as USC, Stanford, UCLA, Hawaii, California, San Jose State, San Diego State, UC-Irvine, Loyola Marymount, Arizona State, Michigan, UC-Davis, California State-Northridge, Hartwick, UC-Santa Barbara, Long Beach State, Santa Clara, Maryland, California State-Bakersfield and Brown retained their positions from last week.

The rankings could change after this weekend as USC, Stanford, UCLA, Hawaii, Loyola Marymount and Michigan, in addition to Cal Lutheran and Marist College, will compete for the 2009 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship at the University of Maryland on Friday, May 8-Sunday, May 10.

The top six Division III teams in the nation remained in the first six positions in the May 6 Division III Poll.  Cal Lutheran and Pomona-Pitzer retained their spots as the sole occupants of the No. 1 and 2 positions, respectively, while Occidental and Redlands moved into a tie for the third spot.  UC-Santa Cruz slipped back to No. 5, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps stayed at No. 6, Cal State-East Bay jumped three positions to No. 7, while Whittier held firm at No. 8.

Chapman and Washington & Jefferson, which slipped from No. 7 and 9, round out the Top 10 by assuming the No. 9 and 10 positions.
