Mike Mulvey Receives 2009 Navy Athletic Association Sword for Men
ANNAPOLIS, Md.--
The United States Naval Academy announced its major athletic award
winners on May 21 at the annual Prizes and Awards Ceremony at
Alumni Hall.
Water polo standout Mike Mulvey (Sr., Carlsbad,
Calif./Carlsbad) was named the winner of the Naval Academy
Athletic Association (NAAA) Sword for Men, presented to that man of
the graduating class who is considered by the Association's
Athletic Council to have personally excelled in men's athletics
during his years of varsity competition.
As a four-year starter at Navy, Mulvey led the Midshipmen to a
96-31 record (.756), three-consecutive Eastern Championships and
three-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. Mulvey was named
Honorable Mention All-American as a junior and a Third-Team
All-American as a senior. He finished his career with 314 points
(fifth most in school history), 205 goals (sixth most in school
history) and 109 assists (second most in school history).
A second-team member of the All-NCAA Tournament team this year after scoring two goals and two assists in a semifinal loss to top-ranked USC, the two-time CWPA Southern Player of the Year finished his season with team highs in points (105), goals (61) and assists (44). His 105 points were the eighth most in school history and his 44 assists were the fourth most in a single season.
Navy head coach Mike Schofield
considers Mulvey the most talented water polo player in school
history.
Mulvey is just the third water polo in school history to win the
award and the first since Luis Nicolao, the current head coach at
Princeton University, in 1992. 2008 Collegiate Water Polo
Association inductee Tom Popp (1989) is the only other water polo
player to win the sword.
