Hopkins' Josh Kratz Named to ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II Team

BALTIMORE, Md. - The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) has announced that Johns Hopkins water polo senior Josh Kratz (Landsdale, Pa./North Penn) has been named to the 2009 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II At-Large College Division Second Team. He is just the second water polo player from JHU and the first since 2001, joining Zaman Mirzadeh, to earn academic all-district honors.

Named the 2008 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Division III Player of the Year, Kratz earned First Team All-America honors while captaining Hopkins to a 17-17 overall record, the 2008 Division III Eastern Championship and a #1 ranking in the final Division III poll of the season.

He became the third player from Hopkins to earn Division III Player of the Year honors, joining Brian Mead '04 and Sean McCreery '07.

He led the Blue Jays with a career-high 102 points this season, as well as ranking second on the team in goals (60) and assists (42). He finished with 30 ejections drawn and 26 steals. Kratz finished his career ranked 15th in program history with 111 career goals.

A three-time ACWPC All-Academic honoree, he earned First Team Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) All-South and Second Team All-East honors this season.

Kratz helped the Blue Jays to 72 wins, three DIII Eastern Championships, a runner-up finish at the Southern Championships and the #1 ranking in the season's final poll twice during his career. A public health major with a minor in entrepreneurship and small business management, he boasts a 3.40 cumulative GPA.

The 2009 Academic All-District II at-large teams were selected by members of CoSIDA. The District II region includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve. Sports eligible under the at-large program include: women's bowling, women's crew, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo, and men's wrestling.
