Sierra Pacific Regular Season Race to be Decided This Weekend at UC-Davis

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of California-Davis already knows that it will be in the National Collegiate Club Championship at the end of the season as the Aggies are hosting and earn an automatic bid to the field no matter the outcome of the Sierra Pacific Division.

However, for the other six teams in the division, the championship tournament on April 18-19 is make or break with only the division champion or division runner-up if UC-Davis win the title making it to the club sports grandest stage.

Before the teams get a chance to battle for the title they must first decide the regular season standings as No. 3-nationally ranked UC-Davis will host the second and final regular season meeting between the seven teams in the division this weekend (March 7-8) at Hickey Pool.

The highlight of the weekend will occur at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday as Davis will face No. 17 California State University-Chico.  Coming off a win over then No. 1 and now No. 4 California Polytechnic State University, the Aggies enter the weekend on a roll.  However, Chico will look to knock off UC-Davis and claim possession of first place in the regular season and the No. 1 seed for the Sierra Pacific Division Championship tournament as both CSU-Chico and UC-Davis enter the weekend with 4-0 marks.

Another game to watch will be UC-Davis versus UC-Berkeley as Cal nearly knocked off CSU-Chico at the first division tournament on February 21-22 at Charles Brooks Aquatic Center in Woodland, Calif.  A win by Cal over the Aggies could move the Bears into the Top 20 of next week's Collegiate Club Poll, drop the Aggies out of the Top Five and clinch the division regular season title for Chico.

Also, do not discount the potential for a 1-2 finish by UC-Davis in the regular season standings as UC-Davis "B" enters the weekend at 3-1 after dropping a 13-3 decision to the Aggies "A" team in the division opener on February 21.  In the recorded history of the club ranks, no team has ever claimed the top two spots in a division's standings, a feat that Davis could accomplish this weekend.

A complete schedule of the games, including the championship tournament, is availabe on the Sierra Pacific Division page.
