Monmouth to Play 24-Hour Game for National Breast Cancer Foundation
MONMOUTH, Ill. -- For the 2008 Heartland Division champion Monmouth College water polo team, the game never ends.
Nor does the drive to end breast cancer.
From 10 a.m. on March 21 and lasting 24-hours, Monmouth will make history as the team strives to compete in a 24-hour game with athletes from all-across the Midwest to raise awareness and funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
"The Breast Cancer event is a way for the team to have fun playing polo with players from all over the Midwest while raising funds for people who need it," notes Monmouth club president Joe Moran.
A possible historic event, the team will be taping the game and submitting the film to Guinness to see if the game is a world record.
"As of yet, Guinness hasn't gotten back to us if it is or not," adds Moran.
Beyond the marathon athletic competition which the team will experience from March 21-22, the club team has been working in advance to raise money to bolster the financial impact of the event.
"We have been asking our community for donations and are planning a dorm-storm to try and raise money from students. The school is also involved as the sororities are volunteering as managers and event workers during the night."
Funded in part by the school and primarily by the individual players, the club team at Monmouth College is no stranger to fund-raising having to raise funds for travel and lodging and water polo equipment during the year.
"Originally, we were planning to hold a record-breaking event in order to help boost our funds," Moran admits, "but when we realized how successful this event could be, and how much of an impact it could have in the fight to stop cancer, we decided that all of the money we raise could be used for an even better cause."
Like the Women's Basketball Coaches Association in which member programs wear pink across the nation on one day of games to signify unity in the fight against breast cancer, Monmouth will also be wearing pink as the team has ordered pink plaid suits and a pink ball for the event.
Donations are being accepted for each hour of the game or one flat amount with 100% of all money raised going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. Checks should be made payable to the "National Breast Cancer Foundation" and mailed to:
