Maryland Shocks No. 18 Indiana 11-9 at Fluid Four
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore
Nicole Redder tied a career-high with four goals
for No. 18 Indiana University (13-14, 4-1 CWPA West), but it was
not enough to overcome a consistent University of Maryland attack,
as the Terrapins prevailed 11-9 in the final game of the Fluid
Four.
Maryland jumped out in front early in the first quarter with a
goal, and despite four ties throughout the contest, the Hoosiers
could never grab the lead.
"It's a tough way to end the weekend," said Indiana head coach
Barry King. "We didn't match Maryland's effort,
there's no doubt about that."
Sophomore Kelsey Campbell tallied the first
Hoosier goal, finding the net on a first quarter power play after
an assist from Redder. The Terrapins responded with a six-on-five
goal of their own to take a 2-1 lead heading into the second
period.
Maryland scored on a backhand goal from the post two minutes into
the second quarter. Indiana countered when Redder found freshman
Jakie Köhli, who fired a shot past the
Terrapin goalie as the shot clock was about to expire. Freshman
Kristin Harmidy then took advantage of an foul,
scoring from the left side as the defense retreated to tie things
up at 3-3.
In between two Maryland goals late in the second quarter, Redder
zipped a shot into the upper left corner of the net, leaving
Indiana with a one goal deficit as they went into the break.
The Terrapins continued to put the pressure on to start the second
half, scoring two quick goals to take a 7-4 lead. The Hoosiers
responded with a three goal run of their own, started by Campbell
scoring from the top of the key on a power play. Redder scored the
following two goals for Indiana, each coming from long range as she
navigated her way to clear shots that both powered past the
goalkeeper to tie the game at 7-7. Maryland would regain the lead
21 seconds later with a goal before the end of the third
quarter.
Sophomore Lauren Wyckoff tossed a precise lob pass
to Redder, who scooted past a Terrapin defender and found the net
to bring the Hoosiers even with Maryland at 8-8 early in the
fourth. The normally reliable Indiana defense could not hold the
Terrapins down, as Maryland would score three consecutive goals to
put the game out of reach with two minutes left in the game.
Wyckoff would add a late power play score after a dish by freshman
Hanna Eimstad, but it was too little too late for
the Hoosiers.
Junior Katie Carson made the start at goalkeeper
for the Hoosiers, and dealt with 33 Maryland shots, finishing with
ten saves.
