Washington & Jefferson's Jessica Barby Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team

TOWSON, Md. -- The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) has announced the selection of Washington & Jefferson College junior Jessica Barby (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine'S Academic All-America® At-Large Women's College Division Third Team.

One of 46 athletes named to the College Division first, second and third teams, Barby was the only water polo player honored in the nation by the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee.

The Presidents' second-leading scorer this season with 31 goals and 36 assists for 67 points, Barby was also third on the squad with 14 steals and earned CoSIDA All-District II academic first team honors.

A child development and education major, she helped the Presidents win a school-record 11 games in 2009 and earned its sixth invitation to the Collegiate III National Championships in Thousand Oaks, Calif., placing sixth of eight teams.

At the CWPA Southern Division Championship, Barby helped the Presidents claim fifth place as her four-goal effort lifted the Presidents to a 7-6 win over the Grove City College Wolverines.   Further, she netted a hat-trick in an 8-7 win over the Wolverines at the Division III tournament as she concluded the five match event with eight goals.

Last year as a sophomore, Barby collected 19 goals and nine assists as she stands among the active career scoring leaders on the Presidents' squad.

The 23rd student-athlete in Washington & Jefferson College history to earn Academic All-America honors, her award marks the 33rd presented to the institution as W&J boasts 10 student-athletes who have won the award twice.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
