Monmouth College's Joe Moran Named 2009 CWPA Men's Club Scholar-Athlete of the Year

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. --  The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA), the largest single sport athletic conference in North America, announces the selection of Monmouth College's Joe Moran (Sr., Naperville, Ill./ Neuqua Valley) as the inaugural recipient of the Men's National Collegiate Club Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

The highest honor bestowed by the league to an active player, matched only by the induction of a former player to the league's Hall of Fame, the award recognizes the outstanding student-athlete who has achieved success in both the scholastic (3.25 or higher cumulative grade point average) and athletic arenas while possessing a spirit which provides service to the community.

Each CWPA institution was eligible to nominate a student-athlete for the award with the recipient being selected based on a points system from his excellence in Community Service, CWPA Academic Honors, Scholastic Achievement and All-Conference/All-Eastern Tournament selections over their career.

A two-time CWPA Scholar-Athlete team honoree for holding a cumulative grade point average above 3.25, he holds a 3.3 cumulative GPA in Political Science and History.  Over the past two seasons, he guided the Crab People to a two-year record of 16-6 in Heartland Division play (11-5 regular season), including the 2008 regular season and division championships, and seventh place finishes at the 2007 and 2008 Division III National Collegiate Club Championships.

A 2007 and 2008 Heartland Division All-Conference first team selection, 2007 Division III  All-America first team and 2008 Honorable Mention selection, Moran has been active in a varsity of causes away from the pool and the classroom.  Most notably, he organized a 24-hour Breast Cancer charity water polo game during the fall of 2008 while also performing community service through his fraternity.
