Johns Hopkins' Jamie Neuwirth to Compete in 2009 Maccabiah Games
BALTIMORE, Md. - Johns Hopkins University water polo driver Jamie Neuwirth (Ross, Calif./Phillips Andover) is among 8,000 athletes from approximately 60 nations world-wide who will participate in the 18th Maccabiah Games in Tel Aviv, Israel beginning on July 12.
Sometimes referred to as the "Jewish Olympics", these Games are held every four years in Israel and attract the most outstanding Jewish athletes from around the world. Neuwirth will represent the United States in the two-week competition that will begin with Opening Ceremonies in Tel Aviv's Ramat Gan Stadium.
A rising senior, Neuwirth is the only active Johns Hopkins athlete participating as he will be a senior on the 2009 Blue Jays' water polo team. He is one of 13 players selected to the United States water polo team. Neuwirth enjoyed the finest season of his career as a junior as he posted 17 goals and seven assists as the Blue Jays finished the season ranked number one in the nation in Division III. Johns Hopkins also won the Division III Eastern Championships for the 11th time in school history. Neuwirth and his teammates will open play against Mexico on July 13 and play four games in the round robin competition before moving into the medal round.
