CWPA Members Earn 18 All-America Selections on 2008 Men's ACWPC List
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The Collegiate Water Polo Association is proud to announce the selection of 18 athletes to the 2008 Men's Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America Teams.
On the Division I squad, United States Naval Academy attacker Mike Mulvey earned third team honors to lead the CWPA selections, while utility players Richie Hyden (Bucknell University), Kyle Wertz (United States Naval Academy) and Brendan Colgan (Princeton University) received honorable mention accolades as 36 student-athletes were recognized by ACWPC.
Mercyhurst College dominated the seven-member Division II team as goalkeeper Andy Sekulski, two-meter Andrew Schonhoff and Alex Moggridge accounted for nearly half of all the athletes honored. In addition, Schonhoff and head coach Curtis Robinette were recognized as the Division II Player and Coach of the Year, respectively.
Division III accounted for eight of the league's All-America honors as Johns Hopkins University's Josh Kratz (utility), Alex Bonds (two meter defender) and Chris Hutchens (goalkeeper) received first team honors and Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Mike Smith Bronstein (utility) garnered two-team accolades to lead the way.
They are joined by Penn State Erie, The Behrend College's Jon Bacon (two meters), MIT's Devin Lewis (utility) and John Preis (two meters), Washington & Jefferson College's John Todd (goalkeeper) and Andrew Whittam (utility), Johns Hopkins' Kyle Gertridge (driver) and Connecticut College's Sam Mitchell (utility) who all earned honorable mention notice.
Hopkins, which finished the season as the No.1 ranked team in Division III, wrapped its the season with more hardware as Kratz and head coach Ted Bresnahan earned Player and Coach of the Year honors.
Kratz is the third player from Hopkins to earn Division III Player of the Year honors, joining Brian Mead '04 and Sean McCreery '07. In fact, this is the fifth consecutive year that a Blue Jay has earned the honor. Mead took home Player of the Year honors in 2004, before McCreery claimed the honor in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Bresnahan earned his second National Coach of the Year award, having previously earned the honor in 2005.
The four All-America selections for Hopkins are the most in a single-season in program history, as are the three first team selections.
