Mercyhurst Releases 2009 Women's Schedule
NORTH EAST, Pa. -- Four tournaments and a five-game homestand against some of the Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division's best highlight the 2009 Mercyhurst College women's water polo schedule. The season kicks off the weekend of February 7-8 as the Lakers travel to the Princeton Open.
Following a game at Bucknell University on February 14, Mercyhurst will compete in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship versus Marist College, Brown University, Iona College, George Washington University, Saint Francis College, Wagner College and Siena College on February 28-March 1 at Marist.
The Lakers will then hit the road to the West Coast as Mercyhurst will take part in the California Lutheran University Invitational on March 6-8, before going to the University of Michigan for the Michigan Invitational on March 13-14.
While at Michigan, the squad will take on the host Wolverines in the Lakers' Western Division opener on March 14. After returning home, the team will travel to Salem International University and Washington & Jefferson College (March 21) before taking on Grove City College (March 28).
Mercyhurst will wrap-up the regular season Western Division game slate on March 28-April 4 hosting Chatham University (March 28), Penn State Erie-The Behrend College (March 29), Indiana University (April 3), Salem International University (April 4) and Gannon (April 4).
The postseason begins two weeks later as the Western Division Championship tournament will be hosted by Indiana University on April 18-19 with two guaranteed spots and the possibility of an at-large bid to the eight team Eastern Championship on April 24-26 at Harvard University on the line.
Last season, Mercyhurst earned an
at-large bid to the Eastern Championship at Michigan, a feat the
Lakers will look to match or improve upon with a top two finish at
the Western Championship this year.
If the team can qualify for Easterns and take the league
championship, the squad will conclude the season as the league's
automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championship on May 8-10.
Due to the possibility of changes in the schedule during the season, fans should check the Mercyhurst athletics website for updated results and game times.
