Terps Earn No. 1 Seed as No. 20 Maryland Stops Princeton 11-9 OT
PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Princeton
University women’s water polo team fell to University of
Maryland 11-9 in overtime on Sunday, April 5 at DeNunzio Pool.
Princeton came back to force overtime in the loss.
The game was close throughout but Maryland held one-goal edges at
halftime and at the end of the third quarter. Princeton forced
overtime, but Maryland tallied a goal in each of the extra sessions
to earn the 11-9 win.
Junior Phoebe Champion led the Tigers' offense
with three goals while junior Carolina Ardila and
freshman Audrey Zak each scored twice.
Junior Helen Meigs assisted on seven of
Princeton’s nine goals and in doing so tied Ardila’s
school record for assists in a game.
Overall, the Terps finish the regular season at 5-1 in the Southern Division and clinch the No. 1 seed for the division championship. The Terps, who needed a win against the Tigers to take the No. 1 seed, clinches the top-spot due to goal differential in games against Bucknell University.
The game finishes the CWPA Southern Division regular season schedule, as Maryland will take on George Washington University, while Bucknell University meets Princeton at the Southern Division Championship on April 18 at Maryland. The top two teams from the division championship will earn bids to the Eastern Championship, while the remaining two will have to wait word on the possibility of receiving one of two at-large bids to the CWPA Championship field.
