Turtle Power: No. 20 Maryland Bests No. 19 Brown 12-8 in Eastern Championship Third Place Game

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Elina Goldenberg (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) scored four times and Shannon Simerly (Jr., Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) chipped in a hat-trick to lead five University of Maryland scorers as the No. 20 ranked Terrapins handled No. 19 Brown University 12-8 for third place at the 2009 CWPA Eastern Championship on the campus of Harvard University.

The game was nip-tuck throughout the first half as Maryland jumped out to a 2-0 lead on back-to-back exclusion goals by Simerly and Christine Goetsch (Fr., Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcus) at 5:17 and 4:10, respectively, of the first period, before Brown (22-15) answered back with an exclusion score by Rita Bullwinkel (So., Portola Valley, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) at 2:55.

Brown tied the game 13 seconds into the second period as Sarah Glick (Jr., Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista) placed a penalty shot past Maryland netminder Ashleigh Jobson (Sr., Annapolis, Md./The Severn School) at the 7:47 mark.  The Bears took their only lead of the game nearly 90 seconds later as Glick buried an even-strength marker at the 6:21 mark to put her team in front 3-2.

However, the Terrapins (16-13) tied the game and retook the lead with the next two goals as Simerly scored at even-strength (4:22) and Goldenberg rattled the cage with an exclusion goal at 3:44.  Brown evened the score before halftime with an exclusion score by Lauren Presant (Jr., Poway, Calif./Poway) at the 3:22 mark as the teams entered the break set at 4-4.

Maryland began to pull away to open the second half as Christen Vagts (Sr., Crofton, Md./South River) and Rachel Jordan (Sr., Fallbrook, Calif./Fallbrook) scored on an exclusion (7:31) and at even-strength (6:10) to take a 6-4 lead.  Brown sliced the margin to a single score at 4:47 with a goal by Presant, but the Terrapins banged in the next two markers as Vagts chipped in another score and Goldenberg tacked on another exclusion goal for an 8-5 lead with 2:34 to play in the period.

Leading 8-6 to begin the fourth period following a Brown goal at the 2:15 mark by Glick on an exclusion chance, Maryland pushed its margin to 9-6 before the Bears clawed their way back to 9-8 with 5:04 to play in the period.

Facing the possibility of a dramatic comeback defeat, the Terps put the game away in short succession with Goldenberg nailing an exclusion goal at 3:05 and a penalty shot at 1:43 to go in front 11-8 before Jordan closed out the day's scoring with an exclusion marker with 54 seconds to go.

In goal, Jobson stopped four shots to earn the win, while Brown's Stephanie Laing (Jr., Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) suffered the loss in a nine-save performance.
