Seedings for 2009 Eastern Championship Announced
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- No. 15-nationally ranked Hartwick College, which finished the regular season with a 9-1 mark in Northern Division play, has been tabbed the top seed for the 2009 Eastern Championship hosted by Harvard University at Blodgett Pool on April 24-26. Western Division Champion University of Michigan and Southern Division Champion University of Maryland follow as the Wolverines and Terrapins earned the No. 2 and 3 seeds, respectively.
The Hawks edged out the Wolverines for the top position based on head-to-head competition as Hartwick downed Michigan 9-7 during the weekend of February 28-March 1.
No. 12 ranked Michigan, which went 10-0 in Western Division play to capture the division crown, and Maryland, which finished 7-1 in division play to take the Southern title, are followed by No. 17 and Western Division runner-up Indiana University, No. 19 and Northern Division runner-up Brown University, Southern Division fourth place finisher Bucknell University, Southern Division runner-up Princeton University and Northern Division third place finisher and host Harvard University.
The championship tournament will begin at noon on Friday, April 24 when Hartwick takes on Harvard. Day 1 action will conclude with three more games as Indiana meets Brown at 1:30 p.m., Michigan and Princeton clash at 3:00 p.m. and Maryland and Bucknell face-off at 4:30 p.m.
Following the conclusion of Day 1 competition, the teams will travel to the Holiday Inn-Boston/Somerville for the annual Eastern Championship banquet during which the All-Conference, Coach of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year awards for the Northern, Southern and Western Divisions will be announced and handed out.
In addition, Slippery Rock University's Diane Stein-Swigart will be inducted into the Collegiate Water Polo Association Hall of Fame during the banquet.
Day 2 (Saturday, April 25) will feature the winners of Day 1 games facing off to advance to the semifinals before competition concludes on Sunday, April 26 with the seventh, fifth, third and championship games.
The victor of the Eastern Championship tournament will receive the league's automatic bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship on May 8-10 at the University of Maryland's Campus Recreation Center.
