No. 19 Brown Holds Off Harvard 7-6 in Northern Division Finale
Norton, Mass. - Junior Lauren Presant (Poway, Calif./Poway) tallied her second goal of the game with just 1:55 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Brown University women's water polo team (18-12) a one-goal advantage over the Harvard University Crimson (9-11) and a 7-6 victory at Balfour Natatorium on the campus of Wheaton College on April 11.
The Bears gained a 3-1 lead over
the Crimson during the first eight minutes of play, after junior
Sarah Glick (Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista) started
off Brown's scoring just 45 seconds into the game. But Harvard's
Monica Zdrojewski tied it 1-1 at the 6:44 mark. Glick then scored
another with 3:49 left followed by a goal by sophomore Rita
Bullwinkel (Portola Valley, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) to head
into the second quarter.
Bruno increased its lead to 5-1 after goals by Presant and Glick,
but the Crimson's Zdrojewski cut the deficit to three, 5-2, with 39
seconds left in the half. Harvard's defense kept the Bears
scoreless in the third quarter, as the Crimson tallied two goals to
come within one. Harvard almost tied it up with just under two
minutes to go, but Devan Kennifer's shot hit the post. Another
scoring opportunity presented itself for the feisty Crimson, but
Glick put an end to it with a big steal.
It was an intense battle in the fourth quarter, but sophomore
Joanna Wohlmuth (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira
Costa) came up with a big goal for the Bears to go ahead
6-4 at the 6:07 mark. The Crimson then went on to score
back-to-back goals from Lizzie Abbott and Kennifer to tie the game
6-6, but sophomore Katherine Stanton (Danville,
Calif./Monte Vista) nailed one past goalkeeper Nicole
Perlman to take the lead. Harvard wasn't going to go down without a
fight, and it was Brown's outstanding defense down the stretch kept
the Crimson off the scoreboard. Stanton had a big defensive stop
with 1:15 remaining in play, as junior goalkeeper Stephanie
Laing (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) recorded 10 saves to lead
the defense.
Glick tallied a hat-trick in today's win to lead Brown in scoring,
and also recorded two steals and two ejections. Presant posted two
goals, two steals, two ejections and an assist, while both Wohlmuth
and Bullwinkel added a goal apiece. Wohlmuth also chipped in with
three steals, an assist and two ejections.
