Godlewski Makes 15 Saves as No. 4 Michigan Downs No. 7 Utah 6-4 to Finish Seventh at 2009 National Club Championship

DAVIS, Calif. --  University of Michigan goalie Kat Godlewski (Jr., Troy, Mich.) made a tournament high 15 saves to earn Player of the Game honors and lead No. 4-nationally ranked University of Michigan to a 6-4 win over No. 7 University of Utah in the seventh place game at the 2009 National Collegiate Club Championship on the campus of University of California-Davis.

Making their first appearance at Nationals since placing third at the 2007 Championship hosted by Williams College, the Wolverines took the lead with one minute left in the first period as Jacque Gowin (Sr., Santa Clara, Calif.) punched in a man-up goal.

Utah tied the score at 1-1 five seconds into the second period with an exclusion score by Katie Maasberg (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah), but Michigan ripped off four goals to close out the first half to carry a 5-1 lead into halftime

Anne-Lise Maag (Med., Menlo Park, Calif.) started the run for the Wolverines as she connected on a five-meter penalty shot at 5:28 before Jessica Carr (So., Palo Alto, Calif.) tacked on a marker at 4:54 to build the advantage to 3-1.  Maag struck again at 3:14 with a strong move in front of the cage which allowed for a wide-open tally before Gowin closed out the half by finishing an inside move with 2:15 left on the clock for a four-goal margin at the break.

The Utes closed the gap to three goals in the third period as Adri Pachelli (So., Salt Lake City, Utah) converted on a layout shot at 1:35, before Maasberg tallied her second score of the day with 6:07 to play in the fourth to pull Utah to within 5-3.

However, Merideth Segovia (So., East Grand Rapids, Mich.) gave the Maize and Blue some breathing room with a shot from the outside which found nothing by net to give the Wolverines at 6-3 lead with 2:30 on the clock.

Utah sliced the lead to 6-4 13 seconds later as Maasberg completed a hat-trick with a backhand shot, but the Utes could pull no closer in the waning moments as Michigan held on for the two-goal victory.

Between the pipes for Utah, Sarah Close (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah) made six saves as the Utes finish eighth in the final tournament standings.   It marks the fourth top 10 finish in program history as the team previously placed fourth (2004) and sixth (2002, 2006) in three previous National Collegiate Club Championship appearances.
