No. 8 Arizona Sinks No. 4 Michigan 10-5 to Advance to Fifth Place Game at 2009 National Collegiate Club Championship
DAVIS, Calif. -- Justine Hedlund (Sr., Portola Valley, Calif.), Cameron Kliner (Gr.. Los Angeles, Calif.), Rachel Rodia (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.), Patrica White (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.) and Jennifer Shah (Sr., Yuma, Ariz.) all scored pairs of goals to share Player of the Game honors as No. 8 University of Arizona defeated No. 4 University of Michigan 10-5 to advance to the fifth place game at the 2009 National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by the University of California-Davis.
The Wildcats will take on either No. 5 Univeristy of California-Davis or No. 7 University of Utah at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, May 3 in the fifth place game, while Michigan will meet either the Aggies or the Utes at 9:00 a.m. in the seventh place game.
Arizona jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the game and never looked back as Hedlund and White pumped in tallies at 6:32 and 3:37 of the first period to go in front. Michigan sliced into the lead with a marker by Jacque Gowin (Sr., Santa Clara, Calif.) with an exclusion goal at the three seconds mark of the period, but the Wildcats slashed the Wolverines for a score by Kliner with 6:07 left in the second period to go ahead 3-1.
The Wolverines' Gowin countered with another score at 5:48, but Arizona closed out the first half with goals by White and Kliner at 5:27 and 2:10 to carry a 5-2 lead into intermission.
Michigan's Anne-Lise Maag (Med., Menlo Park, Calif.) moved the Wolverines back to within 5-3 at the 6:04 mark of the third period, but Shah and Rodia struck at 4:58 and 4:25, respectively, to pull out to a 7-3 lead.
Maag moved Michigan back to within three with a natural goal at the 3:07 mark, but the Wildcats scored the next two as Shah and Rodia found the back of the cage with four seconds left in the third period and at 5:31 of the fourth period, respectivley, to make the lead 9-4.
The teams exchanged goals before the final horn as the Wolverines suffered the five-goal loss.
In cage, Kat Godlewski (Jr., Troy, Mich.) made five saves for Michigan, while Rachel Nau (Sr., Danville, Calif.) blocked away five shots for Arizona.
