Newgard Scores Five as No. 19 Dartmouth Stops Carleton 12-1 for 13th Place at National Collegiate Club Championship
DAVIS, Calif. -- Jenna Newgard (Sr., Kalispell, Mont.) recorded five goals to earn Player of the Game honors as No. 19 Dartmouth College overpowered Carleton College 12-1 to finish in a tie for 13th at the 2009 National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of California-Davis.
The Big Green built a 4-1 lead by the end of the first period and 8-1 advantage by the conclusion of the first half to cruise to victory as the team finishes in a tie with No. 14-ranked California State University-Chico for 13th place in the final tournament standings. Carleton, which finished 0-3 in the tournament, earns a share of 15th place in the 16-team championship tournament as the Knights are tied with No. 18-ranked New York University for the final positions in the field.
Overall, Dartmouth built a 2-0 lead before Carleton's Maggie Alexander (Fr., Tigard, Ore.) converted on a scoring chance at the 4:00 mark of the first period to cut the margin in half. The Big Green responded with a 10-goal run to the final horn in the fourth period, including a 4-0 scoring advantage in the second half, to outdistance and fell the Knights.
Besides Newgard, Dartmouth received pairs of goals from Haley Carstensen (Fr., Princeton, N.J.) and Aoife Duffy (So., Mill Valley, Calif.), and a hat-trick from the hand of Catey Pease (Sr., Grand Rapids, Mich.) to account for all of the team's goals.
Between the pipes, Denise Hasson (Sr., Encino, Calif.) concluded her 2009 season with four saves in picking up the win for Dartmouth. Hannah Nerenhausen (So., Davie, Fla.) and Rachel Stephenson (Sr., Tuscaloosa, Ala.) minded the cage for Carleton in the contest combining on seven saves as the Knights placed 15th for the second time in as many tries following a 15th place finish at Northwestern University during the 2006 National Collegiate Club Championship.
