ATHENS, Ohio -- Zach Heathman (Sr., Grandillve, Mich.) scored three goals, including two in the fourth period, to earn Player of the Game honors and lead No. 6 Grand Valley State University to a 5-3 victory against No. 9 University of Oregon in the fifth place game of the 2008 National Collegiate Club Tournament at Ohio University.
The finish matches GVSU's performance at the 2007 National Collegiate Club tournament at the University of Arizona as the Great Lakes Division champion Lakers placed fifth after capturing second (2006) and first (2005) in the two previous seasons.
Oregon, which captured the Northwest Division title earlier this year, dramatically improved on their previous finish at Nationals as the Ducks placed 10th in Arizona last year.
Tied 1-1 at halftime following goals by Trapper Felt (Sr., La Jolla, Calif.) and Heathman at 3:18 and 3:04, respectively, in the second period, the Lakers went in front to stay with 3:37 remaining in the third period on a marker by Marc Wagner (Sr., Holland, Mich.).
Heathman cushioned the lead with his second score of the game with 5:09 remaining in the fourth period and Wagner tacked on his second goal less than a minute later at 4:20 to give Grand Valley a 4-1 lead.
Matthew Sillaman (Sr., Riverside, Calif.) pulled Oregon to within a goal with 1:36 to play as he score on an exclusion at 3:41 and rocketed a shot past GVSU goalie Peter Huyser (Jr., Zeeland, Mich.), but Heathman completed a ha-trick with an insurance tally at the 30 seconds mark to seal the win.
Huyser earned the win stopping six-of-nine shots on goal, while Tony Nuccio (Fr., San Clemente, Calif.) blocked down five shots for the Ducks.
