History and Role

2005 - Committee Established
The Technical Committee was approved and funded by the varsity membership during the CWPA Annual Meeting in December of 2005, to begin active duties during the 2006-07 academic calendar. The inaugural committee was comprised of three members: a non-officiating referee (varsity competition) and two former CWPA coaches. They were to serve for a period of one year, at which point the Technical Committee process and committee members would be evaluated by the membership.

The primary purpose was to educate, train, and evaluate officials. In addition, the committee was charged with the approval of all varsity league assignments, as well as handling post season assignment selections. The goal was to create a system that improved the overall officiating by providing increased feedback to CWPA referees on the varsity level. This included helping referees call the game more closely to current NCAA Interpretations. Members were required travel to three events per season for on-site evaluations, with remaining evaluations performed through videotape review. Weekly conference calls between the committee members also facilitated the evaluation process.

2007 – Structure Revised
During the CWPA Annual Meeting in June of 2007 the membership endorsed the work of the committee and expressed that the process should be continued. They determined that the CWPA staff should now be responsible for locating personnel to serve on the Technical Committee, with final approval of the CWPA Board of Directors. No predetermined number of members or term limit would be mandated. This change was made to provide greater stability and continuity for the committee.
