Heartland Division Player of the Week

March 5, 2007 - Emily Evers
Iowa State University
Evers led the Cyclones to two exciting victories in their very first CWPA tournament including a hard-fought 6-4 victory over 2006 Heartland Division champion Carleton College. The versatile junior was a force on both ends of the pool, frustrating opponents as the team’s primary 2-meter defender as well as finishing with 11 goals on the offensive end, including six markers in a 13-4 victory over St. Mary's University.

April 16, 2007 - Daniela Faas
Iowa State University
Faas helped the Cyclones to a second place finish at the Heartland Division Championship Tournament hosted by Grinnell College. A dominating player, she tallied 16 goals in the regional tournament and recorded her best game against South Region #1 seed Grinnell College with six goals as the doctoral student helped lead Iowa State to an 8-7 win.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mid Atlantic Division Player of the Week

February 5, 2007 -- Sheena Curtin

University of Pennsylvania
A graduate student and first year Penn player, Curtin is no stranger to water polo following an impressive career at Occidental University in California. Thanks to her strong play off the bench, the Quakers rolled to a sweep of the Mid-Atlantic northern region's teams at home on February 3-4. Curtin fueled an explosive Quakers offense that put up 38 goals over three games, netting 13 goals on 16 shots and adding five assists and five steals as the Red and Blue knocked off Penn State (10-5 W), West Chester University (15-2 W) and the University of Pittsburgh (13-1 W).

 

February 12, 2007 -- Natassa Kordic

University of Pennsylvania
A freshman, Kordic led Penn to a 2-2 showing and a third place finish at the Ivy Tournament scoring four goals, including a pair of scores in a 7-4 loss against the varsity squad of Harvard University as the Quakers were tied with the Crimson 4-4 entering the fourth period. In addition, she added four assists and was a strong presence in the Quakers defense, which on the weekend allowed only one goal on man-up opportunities.

 

February 26, 2007 -- Marina Whelan & Jenna Maloka

Duke University
The Blue Devils' goalie, Maloka had 33 saves and anchored the Duke defense with a 67.3 save percentage as the team went 4-0 in their first CWPA competition of the season. Further, she recorded her first career shutout in a 9-0 victory over the University of Richmond. Whelan led the Duke offense notching 16 goals and four assists, including the game-winning goal in overtime against James Madison University in a 5-3 win and recorded a team high six goals in a 12-7 win over Virginia Tech University.


March 26, 2007 -- Carolyn Corona & Elizabeth Lawrence

University of Pennsylvania
The goalie tandem led the University of Pennsylvana to an undefeated 5-0 weekend against the Southern teams in the CWPA's Middle Atlantic Division while combining to allow eight goals in five games, racking up over 50 saves and eight assists. A senior, Corona was in cage for Penn's 8-1 victory over James Madison University, allowing one goal with six saves and two assists. In the team's final game of the tournament versus Virginia Tech University, Lawrence, a freshman, allowed two goals and grabbed eight saves in an 11-2 victory as the Quakers clinched the #1 seed for the Mid-Atlantic Championship on April 14-15.

 

April 16, 2007 -- Sheena Curtin

University of Pennsylvania
Curtin provided the spark for Penn's offense that led to the Quakers second straight Middle Atlantic Championship. Trailing 3-1 in the first quarter of the Championship game versus Pittsburgh, Curtin notched four goals in the opening minutes of the second quarter leading Penn to a 8-1 second quarter. On the weekend, Curtin had 14 goals on 19 shots and added seven assists, nine steals and five kickouts drawn.

 

April 16 , 2007 -- Stephanie Wallace

University of Pittsburgh
Wallace led Pittsburgh with 13 goals, including six in a 13-9 over Duke University to advance to the championship game, and four in the championship game against Penn while leading the team in ejections drawn.

April 16, 2007 -- Lee Corbett
Middlebury College
A senior from Vernon, Vermont, Corbett was instrumental in helping Middlebury go 4-0 last week as she recorded 10 saves versus Wesleyan University (13-1 W), nine against Yale University "B" (12-4 W), 11 versus Yale University (7-4 W) and nine against Williams College (7-6 W).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

New York Division Player of the Week

April 2, 2007 -- Natalie Levine
Columbia University

Levine led Columbia to a 4-0 record and the #1 seed for the New York Division Championship on April 14-15 at New York University, as she scored 16 of the team's 36 total goals with the game-winner versus NYU in a 13-12 win and the deciding factor in a 13-12 overtime victory against Cornell University. Overall, the Lions finished the weekend 4-0 as Columbia concludes the regular season in the New York Division with an 8-0 mark.

 

April 16, 2007 -- Amy Lin
Columbia University

Lin averaged seven saves per game in wins over Colgate University (5-0 forfeit), Syracuse University (17-6 W) and defending division champion Cornell University (15-4 W) as she anchored the Lions to the 2007 New York Division title and a berth in the National Club Championship Tournament set for May 4-6 at Williams College.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

North Atlantic Division Player of the Week

February 19, 2007 -- Annalise DeConti
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
In her Collegiate Water Polo Association debut, DeConti tallied three goals, four assists, five steals and drew three ejections to lead the MIT Engineers over Boston University 13-1.

March 5, 2007 - Kelly Cavazos
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Cavazos allowed a total of nine goals in five games while averaging nine saves and tallying nine assists and 10 steals as the Engineers downed Boston University (5-3 W, 11-1 W), Bates College (12-1 W) and Bowdoin College (10-2 W, 8-2 W).

March 12, 2007 - Christi Winiarz
Massachusetts Institute of Technology

In the Engineers' lone game of the week, she scored three goals and contributed three assists, eight steals and four drew four ejections as MIT defeated Wellesley College 10-4 to improve to 10-0 on the year, including a 7-0 record in conference play.

 

April 16 , 2007 - Kelly Cavazos
Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Cavazos averaged nine saves per game as the Engineers defeated Wellesley College (9-1 W), Bates College (11-2 W), Boston University (12-2 W) and Boston College (6-5 W) to capture the division title and a berth in the 2007 National Collegiate Club Championship tournament set for May 4-6 at Williams College. She saved her best performance of the tournament to the title game as she made a tournament high 13 stops versus Boston College, including four in the final two minutes of play to preserve the victory for MIT.

Sierra Pacific Division Player of the Week

March 5, 2007 - Kristen Swader
California Maritime Academy
Swader scored 13 goals in four games last weekend at the conference regional tournament hosted by the University of California-Davis as Cal Maritime fell to UC-Davis (18-3 L), California State University-Fresno (19-2 L), St. Mary's College (19-13 L) and UC-Davis "B" (17-9 L). Overall, she accounted for seven assists as she factored in 20 of the 27 goals that Cal Maritime scored at the tournament.

March 12, 2007 - Megan Braun
California Maritime Academy
The primary two-meter player for the Keelhaulers, Braun was pressed into service in the goal when the Keelhaulers normal goalie hurt her knee and was unable to continue in the goal. She played the last quarter in the goal on Sunday morning's game versus Fresno State, recording four saves. She also recorded three steals in the first three quarters while playing in the field. Playing exclusively in the goal in the later game versus UC Davis "B", Braun recorded 11 saves and two steals and kept the Keelhaulers in the game until the very end in an 11-8 loss. The goal-keeping assignment was not something new to Braun as she had a background as a goalie, althought she had not played the position since her sophomore year in high school for a four-year layoff between the pipes. In the field for Saturday's games, Braun scored two goals and recorded four steals versus St Mary's College, and scored twice and had one steal in the team's first game versus California State University-Chico.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Southeast Division Player of the Week

February 6, 2007 -- Elizabeth Stevulak

University of Arizona
A senior, Stevulak made a "Rockyesque" comeback this weekend. After going to the emergency room on Friday evening, unsure if she was going to be able to play in the first conference tournament for the Southwest Division, she received doctor's clearance to play but did not play in the first game against Northern Arizona. Taking to the pool in the second game versus the #12 ranked Falcons of the United States Air Force Academy, she netted a hat-trick for the difference in an 8-5 victory. She added five goals in an 11-4 win over the University of Utah as she finished the tournament with nine goals, three steals and an assist.

Texas Division Player of the Week

March 26 , 2007 -- Cory Dickey

University of Texas
A newcomer to the sport of water polo, Dickey took up the sport late this semester and only recently took up swimming as a hobby. Playing in her first games, she anchored the Longhorns' to the Texas Division regular season title as she tallied two goals and three steals as Texas knocked off Rice University (11-8 W), Baylor University (12-1 W), Trinity University (10-0 W) and Texas A&M University (7-1 W).
