SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Cal Poly took one more step in its quest to defend its national title, defeating Michigan State in a 6-5 nailbiter. Tied going into the fourth quarter, the teams battled back and forth, neither drawing blood until Poly's Marc Waleen netted the game winning goal at 4:01 of the final frame. Poly then played tight defense, with goaltender Mike Kirkland making several key saves to preserve the win. Pete Ryan led the Spartans in scoring with three goals while Jeremy Karas and Brian Young led the Mustangs with two apiece. Cal Poly will meet USC in the final, the team's third match-up of the season. Cal Poly won the previous two by 10-7 scores. Michigan State plays UMass in the Third Place game. |
