Cal Poly Repeats as National Champs

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Cal Poly outscored USC 3-1 in overtime to claim its second consecutive National Collegiate Club Championship title by a 11-9 margin. The first four quarters of the match featured seven ties and five lead changes, but it was in the overtime the action really heated up.

After the teams entered overtime tied at eight, Dan Stenberg gave USC a 9-8 lead with a goal at 1:22 of the first period. Marc Waleen answered for Cal Poly at :53 to deadlock the game once again. Then, with just two seconds remaining in the period, Jeremy Karas scoreed what would prove to be the game winner.

Clutch saves by tournament Most Valuable Player Mike Kirkland and an insurance goal from Brian Young, his third of the game, highlighted the second overtime and when the horn sounded, the Mustangs celebrated back-to-back championships by tossing Coach of the Year John Marsh into the drink.

Young, Kirkland and Derek Bradley, Cal Poly's leading scorer with five goals in the game, were voted to the All-Tournament First Team. Mustangs Karas and Matt Landre garnered Second Team honors. USC's Stenberg earned a place on the All-Tournament First Team.
