Head Referee Responsibilities

This page has been designed as a checklist for CWPA Head Referees.  An additional $20 will
be given to each tournament’s head referee for the proper performance of their responsibilities.
Referees wishing to work as a head referee must have attended a CWPA Head Referee
Clinic withing the past two seasons.

Head Referee Training:

All Head Referees are required to attend one Head Referee Clinic every calendar year in order
to serve as a head official at CWPA League Events. These clinics are held at the start of both
the men's fall and women's spring water polo seasons. To register for the next Head Referee
Clinic, contact the Director of Officials at officials@collegiatewaterpolo.org.

The head referee’s basic duties include:

Prior to the Tournament:

·        Developing game assignments for the designated site and ensure each referee knows
their schedule.

·       Contact other officials working on your weekend for their travel plans.

·       Submit hotel reservation request form on the CWPA website.

·       Make any additional travel arrangements (including car rental).

Cut-Off Dates:

·       Hotel requests should be submitted at the start of the season and no later than three weeks prior to the tournament date. The later requests are submitted, the more unlikely a hotel within a reasonable distance from the site can be acquired.
·       All other hotel and travel requests must submitted in written form and approved by the Director of Officials.

·        The CWPA Office will recommend to all referees that they also get in contact with the head
referee for the sites they are working.

At the Tournament:

·        Supervise the conduct of the tournament and chair any protest committee.

·        Immediately contact the Director of Officials by cell phone for any of the below incidents.

·        Record any incidents that occur including the parties involved and the situation. Incidents
that would require further action include but are not limited to:

            Brutalities

            Disrespect by players and coaches

            Unprofessional conduct exhibited by officials

Violations of the CWPA Code of Conduct

            Protests filed

            Circumstances requiring any schedule changes

            Forfeits and “no-contests”

After the Tournament:
