Recruiting Tips -- How to be Seen
What high school athlete would not want to be scouted? Every athlete feels great when a college coach shows up at the game. However, high school athletes should recognize how difficult this is for collegiate coaches. Consider the facts…
Most college coaches coach both men and women or they assist with the swim team. That means there is no off-season during the academic year to see you play.
Most collegiate water polo teams have limited recruiting budgets. Coaches will not have a lot of discretionary money to travel to your school.
So how can you be seen? There are a few simple things you can do to increase your chances.
1. FIgure out which schools you are considering and send your schedule to their coaches. There may be a time when the college coach is in your area able to stop by to see you play.
2. Play during the summer. This is the one time of the year most coaches are available. Several key tournaments are regularly attended by recruiters including the Junior Olympics (USA Water Polo) and the National State Challenge (American Water Polo).
3. Attend camps. Once you narrow your school choices, determine if any have summer camps. If not, contact the coach to see if he/she helps out at another camp.
4. Invite the coach. Nothing is more direct than a call to the coach.
By following these simple suggestions, you will increase your chances of being scouted.
