Recruiting Tips -- Honesty

In the recruiting process, it may be tempting to deceive a coach and lead him or her to believe you are more interested in their program than you really are. This type of deception is really harmful on several levels.

#1 It can backfire for you personally. College coaches often discuss their potential recruits with each other. When comparing notes, it will become obvious that you have lied to one or more coaches.

#2 It hurts other water polo players. The slot the collegiate coach may be reserving for you could have gone to another athlete desiring to attend that school.

#3 It damages the reputation of your high school coach and team as your program becomes known for turning out untrustworthy athletes.

#4 It hurts the underclassmen on your high school team. A collegiate coach will not want to get burned twice from the same program, believing he has a potential recruit, only to learn the individual had no intention of attending.

Be honest with your decision-making and if you are unsure which institution you want to attend, tell the coach. You will not be the first undecided recruit the coach has encountered and the coach will respect your position.
